The Galway Clinic is a leading centre for the provision of Cardiac care in the west of Ireland. It was established in 2005 and has gone from strength to strength in providing a full range of cardiac services.Caring for patients having difficulty with the heart's rhythm
and electrical signalling is provided by the Cardiac
Electrophysiology service at the clinic.
Electrophysiology is a sub speciality of Cardiology and deals with the study and treatment of heart arrhythmias using catheter ablation to permanently cure most arrhythmias. In the past many patients could only be treated with lifelong medications for many arrhythmias. The development of Cardiac Electrophysiology allows us to use a variety of highly specialised approaches to heart rhythm problems. It is possible to map most arrhythmias inside the heart using specialized catheters with an electrophysiology study. These arrhythmia circuits can in many cases be cauterised or ablated leading to a permanent cure. Dr Brendan O’Cochlain of Galway Cardiology is the Consultant Electrophysiologist at the Galway Clinic that specialises in the treatment of heart arrhythmias. A full range of cardiac treatments and procedures are provided by Dr O’Cochlain.
The Electrophysiology Laboratory at the Galway Clinic is
a procedure room designed to perform diagnostic,
therapeutic and interventional electrophysiology based
procedures.
The Electrophysiology service was started at the Galway Clinic in 2005 and provides an extensive range of treatments. The centre was started by Consultant Electrophysiologist Dr. Brendan O’Cochlain on his return from training and working as a consultant in the United States for fifteen years. The nurses and cardiac technicians are highly experienced and provide a professional state of the art service to their patients. Advanced technology allows for many complex procedures and device implants, such as: • pacemakers • internal cardiac defibrillators • loop recorder devices • biventricular pacemaker and ICD devices • mapping of complex arrhythmias • catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation/ flutter, supraventricular tachycardias • transseptal punctures • external or internal cardioversion • device lead extraction • use of intracardiac echocardiography
